Various – Back Up: Mexican Tecno Pop 1980-1989 (Dark Entries)
San Francisco’s Dark Entries are masters of unearthing and reissuing US and European synth-driven music, but this compilation marks the first ever vinyl collection of Mexican new wave and post-punk. While it covers the ‘80s though, the label only had to go back to 2005 to find them, eight of these tracks originally released on a CD entitled ‘Backup Expediente Tecno Pop’ by AT-AT Records, Dark Entries adding an additional two unreleased tracks.
It’s a peek into a country whose musicians were clearly enamoured with the various underground sounds of the decade, the ten tracks combining elements of synth-pop, post-punk, cold wave and even new beat in a manner so accomplished you wonder why they’ve taken so long to unearth.
